The Spa Chalet was built in c. 1860, designed by Sir Joseph Paxton to house the Spa Manager. Paxton was acclaimed for other designs including Crystal Palace and Chatsworth House Gardens.
Paxton designed Scarborough's Spa, which is a short walk from the Chalet. Patrons formerly used toll booths to cross the Spa Bridge with central railings dividing wealthy visitors who paid for the privilege of walking beside the sea view.
